Veteran actress Mollie Sugden has died at the age of 86, her agent has confirmed.

The Yorkshire-born star, best known for playing Mrs Slocombe in BBC sitcom Are You Being Served?, passed away at the Royal Surrey Hospital following a long illness.

Her agent Joan Reddin, who began representing Sugden in the 1960s, said the actress had become a "very close friend".

"She had had a long illness and various problems but it was very quick in the end. Her twin boys were with her and she faded away," Ms Reddin added.

"She was a lovely, lovely person and I never had any trouble with her. She was a great professional."

Born in Keighley in 1922, Sugden trained at the Guildhall School of Music and worked for a long period in repertory theatre, meeting her late husband William Moore.

She starred in Coronation Street and The Liver Birds before landing her most famous role as Mrs Slocombe in 1972, and later earning cult fame in the US as Are You Being Served? found new fans in the early 90s.
