A quarter of new Big Brother contestants have passed tasks to be granted official housemate status.

Sixteen people entered the Big Brother house as the tenth series began on Thursday night, with none of the group seeming to notice that the living room was bereft of furniture.

Karly Ashworth, a 21-year-old glamour model, was the first to notice the contestants' inability to escape the living room, with retail manager Noirin Kelly, 25, not realising how right she was in replying: "Yes, we will have to eat in here, sleep in here, this is it."

Yet two housemates soon managed to earn official housemate status and access to the bedroom for champagne and nibbles.

Twenty-three-year-old Brazilian student Rodrigo Lopes responded to Big Brother's call for a contestant to come to the diary room and, with the help of Noirin, became an official housemate.

Rodrigo's challenge was to convince one non-housemate to shave off their eyebrows and have comedy glasses and a curly moustache drawn on their face with permanent marker, and re-applied every day for the foreseeable future.

He convinced Noirin to be his volunteer and they passed their task within the required four minutes, becoming the first housemates of 2009.

After the non-official housemates were issued with the uniforms they must wear until they are granted full access to the house, Lisa Wallace, 41, became the third official housemate, simply through answering the Big Brother phone.

Lisa was then given the chance to secretly pick another contestant to join her as a housemate and 15 minutes later named 24-year-old visual merchandiser Kris Donnelly as her pick.

Asked in the diary room why she had picked Kris, Lisa replied: "I like Kris because we are both womanisers, we both love women. There was a natural bond".

As the house prepared to sleep after two in the morning housemates Lisa, Kris, Rodrigo and Noirin gathered in the bedroom while the non-housemates slept on the living room floor.
