Arctic Monkeys have confirmed they are back in the studio working on their eagerly-anticipated third album.

According to frontman Alex Turner, the four-piece are recording the follow-up to Favourite Worst Nightmare with Queens of the Stone Age singer Josh Homme on production duties.

"We've been recording the new album with Josh Homme," he told the BBC.

"It's been going really well but it's still early stages at this point."

The surprise news comes after Homme hinted at working with the Arctics during Queens of the Stone Age's appearances at the Reading and Leeds festivals in August.

Artic Monkeys worked with Jim Abbiss and Alan Smyth on their hugely successful debut Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not before heading to the studio with Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford for the Mercury-nominated Favourite Worst Nightmare.

Turner was speaking ahead of the release of the band's new live DVD Arctic Monkeys at the Apollo, due for release on November 3rd.

The concert film was directed by Richard Ayoade, star of The IT Crowd, and was shot at the Manchester Apollo in December 2007.

"We chose this gig because we were just thinking about making a film really," Turner explained.

"The big gigs at the cricket ground [Old Trafford] in the summer weren't as suitable in terms of where you could set up cameras and stuff like that.

"So I thought it were important to create an arena where you could just film it well."

Bassist Nick O'Malley added: "We decided to do it now because we had a second album out, so we had enough songs to put it on a DVD.

"We'd never seen ourselves play before either so it was a good way of keeping some sort of memory."
