Who's next? As a certain legendary band once asked. We seek to delve into the music industry and come up with a bountiful collection of stars to be. Or is that just wannabes? This week it's the turn of Brighton-based Passenger.
Before I spoke to Passenger, the only information readily available was they were a new band from Brighton. I pondered what this band might be like, perhaps they took their name from the Iggy Pop song and were actually a raw, powerful punk outfit ready to deliver some much-needed tunes in an atmosphere of guitar bands that all, give or take a few, sound the same.
So, I asked, take it your name is from the Iggy Pop song? "No," answer the band. They elaborated that it was based on their idea of looking in on people's lives from the outside, kind of like a passenger in other people's lives. Fair enough really, and when you listen to Passenger they are indeed as far from early 70s Michigan as you can possibly imagine. But before we throw the mediocre guitar band tag at them, let us consider some of their songs.
The band's new single, Do What You Like, is a decent tale over a quirky beat which makes the track more interesting than your average strum. Mike Rosenberg, the singer and co-songwriter, has a perfectly able voice which gets to grips with the band's observational lyrics.
"We wanted to make a record of sort of modern characters," the band told InTheNews. "It could be an old guy in a pub thinking about his life."
Passenger's album, which the band says has a "very English feel", will be released in September.
You can catch them at Lewes Guitar festival on August 3rd and the Beautiful Days festival on August 17th.
The band will also be playing at V Festival in Stafford on August 18th and Chelmsford on August 19th.
