Who's next? As a certain legendary band once asked. We seek to delve into the music industry and come up with a bountiful collection of stars to be. Or is that just wannabes? This week it's the turn of Circuits.
It seems you can't move without hitting a young new band touting their own brand of pogo-inducing new wave rock these days. With the likes of the Pigeon Detectives, the Holloways, the Maccabees and countless other outfits jostling for space in this crowded genre, what difference does the addition of yet another shouty indie group to the arena make?
Circuits are a London four-piece who cite influences such as Elvis Costello, the Specials and the Clash, while also encouraging listeners to think of them as "the Police if Sting had been a fighter, not a tantric lover". Formed in 2006, they have been relentlessly plugging their music online and on the live stage, with the reward of a sell-out first single, plays on national radio and an army of followers.
Upon first listen, their forthcoming single Young Enough Not To Care gives more than a hint of the admiration the band seem to have for Joe Strummer and company, which might be enough to put off anyone hoping to find a song with a new idea or two. Snappy bassline? Check. Loud, jagged guitar? Check. Earnest vocals that occasionally lapse into a reggae lilt? Check.
However, there's no denying that Circuits know how to create a pop-tinged slice of punk that is practically guaranteed to get gig-goers jumping up and down from the start. Taken as a soundtrack to a beer-fuelled night out rather than a contender for the next musical revolution, Young Enough Not To Care ticks all the right boxes, while Little Victories on the flipside is more of an out-and-out rock track that again is likely to make feet tap rather than walk away.
So will the band actually make a splash bigger than those of their similarly ambitious counterparts? Fans of the Pigeon Detectives et al will probably welcome Circuits and their pogo pop with open arms.
Young Enough Not To Care is out on Try Science! on August 13th.
