Jonas Armstrong has quit the BBC's Robin Hood show, the star has announced.

Armstrong, who plays the show's title character, will leave at the end of the third series.

The 27-year-old claimed that he had enjoyed playing Robin Hood, describing it as an "incredible experience", but added he was now looking for "new challenges".

"Over the last three years I have met some wonderful people and have only amazing memories to take with me," Armstrong said in a statement.

A BBC spokeswoman said the third series finale would now be "intriguing and guaranteed to make fans desperate to find out what happens next".

"We cannot confirm the series climax, nor can we guarantee who will survive and who won't," Foz Allen, the show's executive producer said.

Armstrong graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 2003. His television acting credits include The Ghost Squad, Teachers and Island at War.

The third series of Robin Hood will be show on BBC1 early next year.
