Vines: Best Of

Vines - what might have been...
EMI Records, out Monday May 5th.
In a nutshell...
Classic rock 'n' roll with a subtle blend of soft pop rock mixed in.
What's It All About?
The album is 17 songs long; the Best Of is a compilation of the Vines' first three albums and it's obvious to see that their six-year career has been a successful one.
The album is enjoyable and some songs such as Get Free and Outtathaway will have you out of your chair. And it's worth remembering the influence of their body of work when the similarities between certain aspects of their sound and that of current chart-dwellers become too obvious to ignore.
Who's it by?
The Vines are an Australian four piece who left their home land in 2002 to play four sell-out tours, see their debut album hit the front of four NME covers as well as the cover of US music bible Rolling Stone. The Best Of is a compilation of Highly Evolved, Winning Days and Vision Valley, each album progressively seeing the band evolve. This collection reminds you just why they were so successful and why the likes of the Killers are requesting they duet with them on stage at sell-out gigs six years after the band first hit the music scene.
As an example...
"Don't listen to the radio."
Likelihood of a trip to the Grammys
This album is for pretty much every rocker, if you like your rock music with a hint of electro and pop, you'll like this. It's an enjoyable album and could possibly surprise us and get in with a nomination but I feel it's rather unlikely a greatest hits collection will make it that far.
What the others say
"For the most part, The Best of the Vines proves these Aussie neo-garage rockers are a musical force to be reckoned with." – Pop Matters
So is it any good?
This is an album for people who like to rock, the type of album full of those songs the lads sing in unison after a few too many, much like most of Oasis’ material.
Its not a bad album, but again it's a greatest hits. Although you can see why rhe Vines have enjoyed such success over such a period of time it isn't anything to write home about. And considering they have recently parted ways with their US label Capitol and released the Best Of over there in April via UK home Heavenly Recordings I don't think we've seen the last of the Vines.
7/10
