Metallica marked their new album reaching the top of the album charts with a huge launch party at London's O2 Arena last night.

Despite only being released on Friday September 12th - though some stores began selling early after it was leaked - Death Magnetic followed an enthusiastic critical response to beat Glasvegas to the number one sport in the UK album charts.

And in a two-hour, stripped-down set without any of their characteristic pyrotechnics or ambitious stage design, the metal foursome showcased a number of tracks from their ninth album, including That Was Just Your Life, Cyanide and recent single The Day That Never Comes.

Fan favourites such as Of Wolf and Man, Wherever I May Roam and Until It Sleeps were performed for a fan club-only audience and frontman Hetfield joked about the inclusion of Frantic, from "the very well-loved St Anger album"

He had earlier insisted that fans put their mobile phones and cameras away.

"Putting a two-minute video of Metallica on YouTube isn't going to make you famous," he said. "Just enjoy the show."

The house lights stayed up for a three-song encore, with the set closing with Seek and Destroy, as Metallica's set at Reading festival had.

Metallica's set list was:

That Was Just Your Life
The End Of The Line
The Thing That Should Not Be
Of Wolf and Man
One
Broken, Beat And Scarred
Cyanide
Frantic
Until It Sleeps
Wherever I May Roam
For Whom The Bell Tolls
The Day That Never Comes
Master Of Puppets
Blackened
Stone Cold Crazy
Jump In The Fire
Seek And Destroy
