Can Elizabeth continue to resist Captain Jack?

Other Reviews

Directed by Gore Verbinski, out May 24th at the cinema, starring Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, running time 168mins .

In a nutshell…

Hilarious. Heroic. Romantic. Action-packed.

What's it all about?

This picks up directly after part two and sees a desperate bid by the world’s pirates to rescue Jack Sparrow from the afterlife, before uniting to do final battle with the powerful East India Company and their deadly ally Davy Jones.

Who's in it?

Depp, Bloom and Knightley reprise their roles and get to explore their characters’ strengths and flaws thanks to an emotional rollercoaster of a script.

Johnny Depp adds a melancholic streak to his gloriously eccentric Jack Sparrow, a trait reflected by Keith Richards playing his father in a superbly low-key cameo.

Bill Nighy returns as villainous Davy Jones and actually makes you care for what is an embittered sea monster. Unfortunately, Geoffrey Rush’s Captain Barbossa is little more than a comic foil and Yun-Fat Chow’s Sao Feng, a Chinese pirate warlord who oozes menace and sly humour, is woefully under-used.

As an example…

“Shoot him, pull out his tongue and then shoot his tongue!” (Jack Sparrow’s suggestion for dealing with a foe.)

Likelihood of a trip to the Oscars

The Pirates franchise has been box office gold, a fact that may produce a result or two come the awards season.

What the others say

“Just like Dead Man’s Chest, the new movie serves up more thrills and spills than you can shake a rusty cutlass at. Unfortunately, just like the last movie, it goes on and on. And on.” – Daily Mirror.

“Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End is not a complete shipwreck but it sails perilously close,” – Manchester Evening News.

So is it any good?

Forget all the other so-called summer blockbusters because this is the real thing.

A stunning adventure jam-packed with romance, comedy both knockabout and bizarre, brilliantly intertwined character arcs and awesome set-pieces.

Channelling the likes of Captain Blood, director Gore Verbinski and his dazzling cast pull out all the stops to wrap up the Pirates trilogy in style.

As the film opens the age of piracy is doomed as the East India Company tightens its grip but lovers Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner, and a motley crew of allies and former enemies hatch an audacious plan by gathering the world’s pirate lords to make a last stand.

However, they first have to rescue a distinctly unhinged Jack Sparrow from the surreal environs of Davy Jones’ Locker.

After a dizzying array of fights and subterfuge, the film explodes in a thunderous showdown between Sparrow and Davy Jones that will leave you breathless.

9/10
