Actor Ryan O'Neal's lawyer has said his client will be exonerated having been arrested with his son for suspected drug possession.

The Oscar-nominated actor and his 23-year-old son Redmond were arrested on Wednesday at their Malibu home after police discovered a suspected narcotic, thought to be crystal meth.

The search was part of a routine police check on Redmond, who remains on probation after pleading guilty to drug possession charges earlier this year.

Both O'Neal and his son were released on bail, set at $10,000 (£5,500) each.

The 67-year-old actor's lawyer Mark Werksman told the Associated Press news agency on Thursday: "The drugs found were not his, he would never use them.

"We know that when all the facts come out, he should not be charged with any crime here."

He added: "He's tried to lead a peaceful life - he's acting and he's caring for his family, and this is the last thing he ever wanted or expected."

Mr Werksman said O'Neal senior had been "shaken up" by the arrests but did not pass comment on whether the drugs may have been Redmond's.

O'Neal is best known for the 1970 film Love Story, for which he was nominated for an Academy award.

Redmond is his son from a relationship with actress Farrah Fawcett.
