Ellen DeGeneres and her long-term partner Portia de Rossi have married, it has been confirmed.

The TV presenter and her actress partner have been dating since 2004 and the former announced their plans to marry during a taping of her talkshow in May.

DeGeneres, 50, confirmed the impending nuptials after the California supreme court ruled that a state ban on same-sex marriages was unconstitutional.

Attending the Daytime Emmy awards in June - where DeGeneres won a fourth trophy - de Rossi showed reporters a three-carat diamond ring while DeGeneres promised to show a "little bit" of the marriage ceremony on her TV show.

Speaking to People magazine, the couple's spokesperson confirmed: "Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi were married tonight in an intimate ceremony at their home in Los Angeles."

Both wore Zac Posen outfits and exchanged Neil Lane rings during the ceremony on Saturday, the magazine added.

Guests at the small ceremony - during which the couple made handwritten vows - included DeGeneres' mother Betty and de Rossi's mother Margaret Rogers, who flew in from Australia.

Speaking of her partner last year, DeGeneres said: "She's taught me lessons about myself, and I feel like I've taught her.

"We've both changed and grown, and we just feel like, 'Oh, okay, this is completion.'"

The comedienne and presenter made broadcasting history when her TV alter ego came out as a lesbian on her sitcom Ellen in 1997, becoming the first openly gay leading character in US prime-time programming.
