Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson is to help create another exciting new world by teaming up with Microsoft to develop a series of interactive video games.
The filmmaker, who also brought giant gorilla King Kong to life on our screens, claims that the deal will create a form of entertainment that audiences can watch and enjoy like a film, but with interactive elements.
Under the collaboration, Jackson will create a series for Microsoft's Xbox games console and its online service Xbox Live, based upon the popular Halo game franchise produced by the software giant's Bungie Studios.
Jackson, currently producing a movie based on the Halo series, will work in collaboration with the Microsoft studio to develop new properties for the console under the Wingnut Interactive Studio, a New Zealand-based firm the Oscar-winning director has established along with screenwriter Fran Walsh.
Announcing the new partnership at Microsoft's X06 event in Barcelona, Jackson said that the new Halo series would be aimed at the mass market, rather than exclusively at hard core gamers.
"My vision, together with Microsoft Game Studios, is to push the boundaries of game development and the future of interactive entertainment," said Jackson.
"From a moviemaker's point of view, it is clear to me that the Xbox 360 platform is the stage where storytellers can work their craft in the same way they do today with movies and books but taking it further with interactivity," he added.
