The People's Choice awards have been given out during a pre-recorded show due to the ongoing effects of the Hollywood writers' strike.
With Sunday's Golden Globe awards ceremony already cancelled due to the industrial action, the People's Choice prizes were handed out during a magazine-style show hosted by Queen Latifah.
The majority of the members of the Screen Actors' Guild (SAG) have expressed sympathy with the striking Writers Guild of America (WGA) and are not crossing picket lines, leading to the cancellation of the Golden Globes ceremony and the potential jeopardising of the 80th Academy Awards.
Pirates of the Caribbean and Grey's Anatomy were the big winners at the 34th annual show with four awards for Disney's swashbuckling caper and three for the CBS medical drama.
But because of the strike - which concerns the payment of royalties to writers when their work is redistributed on DVD, mobile phones or the internet - the trophies were presented to the stars in person, with Grey's Anatomy leading man Patrick Dempsey given his award while at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida.
The show would never have been cancelled however, Queen Latifah explained.
"The thing about the People's Choice awards that's different from everybody else is it's the people's choice," she said.
"You can't disrespect the people who keep us working, and that's the people. Ten million people logged on and voted for everyone, so out of respect for them, we have to present the awards."
Justin Timberlake also won three awards while The Bourne Ultimatum won prizes for best action movie and best male action star for Matt Damon.
