Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson has been named the man British men admire most in a new poll.

The presenter and journalist was the clear winner in a poll carried out by XXX Mints while Cockney actor Ray Winstone and foul-mouthed celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay also made the top three.

A good head for business is clearly respected by many British men, with The Apprentice's Sir Alan Sugar named fourth but brawn continues to inspire adulation among UK males as well, with Clint Eastwood named fifth, boxing champion Joe Calzaghe in sixth and Die Hard star Bruce Willis in seventh.

Jon Dixon, an XXX Mints spokesman, commented: ''Jeremy Clarkson was the clear winner in this poll.

"He's confident, knowledgeable and just a little bit arrogant, which are traits that men clearly admire in other men."

XXX Mints' Dixon added: "When it comes to 'men's men', strength seems to be intrinsically linked.

"However, the type of strength we aspire to has shifted," he added. "In 1987 - when XXX Mints launched - it was Arnold Schwarzenegger's rippling muscles and that whole body builder physique that blokes most admired.

"Now Clarkson's gobby attitude and Winstone's 'hard man' persona are what today's men look for in their heroes."

Other male heroes included in the poll were comedians Peter Kay, Ricky Gervais and Simon Pegg, singers Rod Stewart and Ozzy Osbourne, and sporting greats David Beckham and Lewis Hamilton.

The top 20 men that men love are:

1 Jeremy Clarkson
2 Ray Winstone
3 Gordon Ramsey
4 Alan Sugar
5 Clint Eastwood
6 Joe Calzaghe
7 Bruce Willis
8 Peter Kay

10 Ricky Gervais

12 Simon Pegg
13 Lewis Hamilton
14 Chris Moyles
15 Rod Stewart
16 Ian Wright
17 Jonathan Ross
18 Michael Parkinson
19 Ozzy Osbourne
