Jade Goody has been diagnosed with cervical cancer, according to her publicist.

The Big Brother star had been appearing on the Indian version of the reality show - known as Bigg Boss - when she was informed of the diagnosis.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat programme, publicist Max Clifford said the 27-year-old is "extremely upset and frightened and will be back as soon as they can get her on a plane".

Jade had been a member of the Bigg Boss house for only two days when she was informed of the news and producers have now confirmed she has left the show for "medical reasons".

"Jade had some tests recently, then she went off to India to appear in the Indian Big Brother," Mr Clifford continued.

"Yesterday we got a call from her consultant to say she had cancer of the cervix and so she has to come back straight away.

"We put the consultant in touch with the programme maker in India and because of the circumstances was allowed to speak to her and explain the results of her tests."

He added: "The important thing is to get her back as soon as possible and get this treated.

"Obviously there were some problems - that's why she had tests. But she had no idea that would be the diagnosis - she was shocked."

Goody's appearance on Bigg Boss had been billed as an attempt to rehabilitate her image after being accused of racism towards Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty during Celebrity Big Brother.
