The Rolling Stones returned to London last night one year after their last UK gig as part of the A Bigger Bang tour.

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood and Charlie Watts began their latest tour in New York on October 5th 2005 and have since played 152 dates.

Last night was the first of three gigs at the O2 Arena before concluding the mammoth tour and allowing the legendary group to take a well-earned rest.

"It's been a long haul," Richards said last night as the Stones rocked through 19 songs, including Paint It Black, Jumpin Jack Flash, Satisfaction and Honky Tonk Woman.

Richards also sang a couple, playing You Got the Silver from the Let It Bleed album and I Wanna Hold You, from Undercover.

Frontman Jagger was in a typically energetic mood, telling the audience that it was "good to be home and back in London".

"It's taken us 40 years to get from Richmond down to Greenwich," the singer said in reference to some of the band's first gigs during the 1960s in west London.

The band began their set with Start Me Up and played Rough Justice from the latest LP A Bigger Bang.

However, that was the only new track played by the band as they stuck to older songs such as Exile On Main Street's Rocks Off and Tumblin' Dice.

They concluded with an encore of Brown Sugar having earlier zipped through a rockier and quicker Satisfaction.
