Thou shalt always listen to Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip

Dan le Sac and Scroobius Pip - looking for the woman
The inthenews.co.uk interview with Scroobius Pip continues.

Do you think there's a lack of artists producing music that has some sort of social agenda?
I think there is. It's become quite cool for bands to say in interviews 'This is bad, this is bad… ' but then they go back and write songs about their girlfriends. If you've got a platform, you should use it. People listen to bands' songs a lot more than their interviews. It's all very valiant to argue things in interviews but if they can make it sound powerful in a song, why not do that?

Does it matter if people don't agree?
No, as long as it makes people think more. I don't claim to have a wider knowledge than anyone else but it's about putting the questions out there so people can think about issues and question things in a way they might not have previously.

Would you ever want to make your music more commercially accessible?
Well, we didn't expect it to be as commercially successful as it has been. It's electro and poetry, which isn't particularly commercial! But at the end of the day, commercial success isn't what we're striving for.

In what sense?
I don't mean that in a derogatory way, we're very grateful for the coverage we've got and we plan to do all we can to keep getting it, because the more people that listen, the more any message in there is serving its purpose. But we've not thought 'We need to go a bit more pop', for example. It's not the be all and end all. If everyone loves you or likes your music - it's probably not that good. James Blunt and Dido are the biggest-selling British artists of the last ten years and, not having a go at them but, it's music for people who aren't into music. It's just for the background or to sing along to. So why would we want to try and appeal to everyone? As long as we've got the people we want to appeal to, that's what's important.

Are you pleased with the album then?
Ridiculously. Me and Dan record separately, almost, so it wasn't until we sat down together and listened through that… it's come out better than we expected! It feels like a better album than we should be capable of making. And I can't decide if that sounds humble or arrogant!

Was it worth taking your time to release it rather than rushing it out after Thou Shalt… ?
Yeah, we wanted to, we want to do this as a career for a long time, we didn't want to just ride off the back of one single and put out a sub-standard album and disappear. We might not have as much money at the moment as we could have had if we'd gone that route but we have the album that we wanted to make and that we're proud of.

New single Look for the Woman is out on April 28th - is it fair to say it's a departure because it's got a sung chorus?
Yep, Dan's having a good old sing song on it. I mean, the label saw it as the obvious next single and I totally agree because it's got a lot of pop sensibilities. Pop is a perfectly valid genre, it's just that in the last ten or so years in Britain, it's become a dirty word because pop became industry-made music. So it's good that there are people like Kate Nash, Jack Penate and Adele who, if you like them or not, are writing their own songs and making good music and that's becoming pop. It's a huge step in the right direction.
