Prince to play London

Wednesday, 09 May 2007 07:11
Prince will give concert goers free copies of his new album
Prince's UK fans are set to party like its 1999 following news that the US singer is to perform 21 gigs in London this summer.

At a press launch yesterday the star also revealed that the series of concerts in the capital will be the only chance fans have to see him perform in Europe this year.

But keen to let as much purple rain fall on London as possible, Prince is to charge concert goers just £31.21 a ticket - a reference to his recent album 3121.

The singer will open his tour of London on August 1st with a seven-night stint at the 02 arena, formerly the Millennium Dome, before playing at a number of smaller venues.

Tickets for his gigs are likely to provide far better value than those for Barbara Streisand's forthcoming shows at the arena, which traded at up to £600 when they went on sale last week.

Prince revealed that he planned to change his performance for London audiences each night and had learnt around 150 songs from which to choose from for his stint in the city.

The star will even give away free copies of his new album to those who attend the gigs.

Explaining the thinking behind his "extended stay" in London, Prince told journalists: "Last time I was here, a lot of people didn't get to see me, so we're trying to make it affordable for everybody."

The 48-year-old singer, whose catalogue of hits includes Kiss and Raspberry Beret, also hinted that he hoped to perform on stage with Amy Winehouse, having declared himself a "big fan" of the British soul singer.

Music lovers wishing to watch Prince perform at the 02 arena will be able to buy tickets from Friday.
