Nine Inch Nails are giving away their new album The Slip online as a thank-you to fans, according to the band's website.

The ten-track album is available in several formats including MP3, FLAC, M4A or 24/96 WAVE.

The download also includes a pdf with artwork and credit. The band also said for those fans who still like physical formats, a vinyl and CD format will be out in July.

"We encourage you to remix it, share it with your friends, post it on your blog, play it on your podcast, give it to strangers etc," Nine Inch Nails said on the site.

On the site, the band added: "Thank you for your continued support and loyal support over the years. This one's on me."

Fan reaction to the move was positive, with over a thousand comments posted on the site by 17:00 BST.

Rock act Nine Inch Nails, founded in 1988 by Trent Reznor, has spoken out against the music industry in the past.

Trent Reznor announced in 2007 that Nine Inch Nails would proceed independently of record labels, and in March this year the group released nine songs from their instrumental album Ghosts I-IV for free on the site, with the full 36 tracks costing only $5 (£2.55).End of story
