Nicole Kidman to play Dusty Springfield in new biopic

Nicole Kidman signs to star as Dusty Springfield
Nicole Kidman has signed to star as Dusty Springfield in a biopic about the singer.

The Australian actress is to produce and star in the as-yet-untitled project for Fox 2000 studios, reteaming with Michael Cunningham, the Pulitzer-prize winning writer of The Hours.

Cunningham announced he was writing the screenplay for the Springfield film at the 2008 gala for writers' association PEN.

Speaking at the Museum of Natural History in New York City, he said Springfield was "clearly going into history with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones", New York Magazine reports.

And Moulin Rouge star Kidman has now signed to portray the British music legend in the film, which she will produce through her Blossom Films company.

Dubbed the 'White Queen of Soul', Springfield's 60s success was overshadowed by drug and alcohol addictions and struggles with mental illness.

The film is also likely to explore the I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself singer's rumoured bisexual tendencies.

Her record sales saw a resurgence in the mid-90s after Quentin Tarantino soundtracked a pivotal scene in Pulp Fiction with Son of a Preacher Man, but she was sadly diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995, succumbing to the disease four years later.

Springfield's influence is evident in the current success of soulful chanteuses such as Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Adele.

However, the Nicole Kidman project is not the only Dusty Springfield film in development, with Universal Studios working on a biopic with Pushing Daises actress Kristin Chenoweth attached to star.End of story
