Macca gets Brits nod

Tuesday, 11 Dec 2007 14:59
Macca will wow the crowds at the 2008 Brit awards.
Sir Paul McCartney is to receive the award for outstanding contribution to music at next year's Brits, it has been confirmed.

The former Beatle will receive the lifetime achievement award at the February 20th ceremony according to the BPI, the UK's recorded music association.

Listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most successful composer in history, Sir Paul is currently embroiled in a bitter divorce battle with wife Heather Mills, with the settlement expected to be one of the biggest in British legal history.

Ged Doherty, chairman of the Brits Committee, announced the accolade today and confirmed the Wings star will perform at the Earls Court ceremony next year.

He called the award an "historic moment for the Brits" and said McCartney "is one of the greatest songwriters of all time".

"It is a special honour for me to be able to confirm such an influential and important artist to accept the outstanding contribution award and perform at this year's Brits," he added.

BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor commented: "Over a career spanning five decades and more than 100 million albums, very few contemporary artists have had as significant an impact on British music and culture as Sir Paul.

"Few artists can truly be described as legends, and even fewer are revered by the public like Sir Paul. He richly deserves the accolade of legend yet - as anyone fortunate enough to see him on stage will testify - he remains one of today's most compelling performers."
