A year's worth of celebrations have been planned to mark the 50th annual Grammy awards.

The prestigious awards ceremony will next take place on February 10th 2008 and in the run-up to the night a Grammy museum is to be launched along with a retrospective illustrated book.

Included in the museum's focus will be the enduring legacy of all forms of music and the process behind recording.

Celebrations kicked off last night at a ceremony with Recording Academy president Neil Portnow, 27-time Grammy winner and 50th celebration ambassador Quincy Jones, and multi-platinum recording artist and Grammy winner Joss Stone in attendance.

"For some it's a milestone – but we're just getting started," said Mr Portnow. "Over the past 50 years, the Grammy awards has become the world's most famous music telecast and the highest honour bestowed upon music makers."

Jones, a member of the academy for more than 40 years and a member of the Grammy foundation's board of directors since 1992, has been appointed as official ambassador for the 50th celebration activities.

In his new role he will participate in cultural and educational events focusing on music and the arts.

Jones will be honoured for his lifetime work in music with the Grammy foundation leadership award on June 28th.
