Maximo Park have officially kicked off Glastonbury 2009 with an opening set at the Queen's Head stage.
The Geordie quintet's 45-minute stint was delayed by reports of injuries to crowd members, with lead singer Paul Smith urging people not to surge forward.
A massive overspill surrounded the Queen's Head, but festivalgoers sweltering in the heat and stuck in the mud following an early morning shower had no intention of rushing the stage, apart from a couple of pole-shimmiers.
The excessive heat an over-subscribed set led to an initially muted reaction, before the group launched into favourites from their 2005 debut A Certain Trigger.
The crowd sang along to festival-pleasers Limassol, Graffiti and Apply Some Pressure.
Our Velocity, their highest-ever placed single, also drew the set to a positive close, although Smith seemed to have spent a little too long in the sun himself.
"Thank you Glastonbury," he said amid baking afternoon sunshine, "and goodnight!"
Other acts playing tonight include Stornoway and East 17.
