Get Cape: Stop calling me 'political'

Thursday, 15 May 2008 14:47
Get Cape's new single is released on May 19th
The inthenews.co.uk interview with Get Cape.Wear Cape.Fly continues.

Whereas the first album seemed concerned with personal feelings, there's maybe more of a political slant to the second, with songs like I Could Build You A Tower and The Children Are [The Consumers Of] The Future, so...

That's the thing that's been frustrating me, really, because I kind of disagree with that. I think there's two songs that are inescapably political but I don't think the rest of things are that political at all. Tracks like Let The Journey Begin and Postcards From Catalunya are very lyrical and personal. The politics on the first album was more downplayed whereas on this one, I wanted to be as blunt as possible.

So that's something that's been exaggerated and it's not your 'political album'?

I think people have picked one song and decided to analyse the whole album based on that. It's upset me because there are elements of the second album that people have completely overlooked, for example the actual subject matter of The Children... It seems like people have switched off and not realised that the song is actually about bulimia and self-image. And even that's a personal standpoint, I think.

The thing that's upset me more than anything is that people who listened to the first album might not have even gone out and bought this second album because of a review that's said it's a 'really political' record, when realistically, it's got one very politically song, one song that has political elements - though I think The Children… could sit on the first album - and then as a result, I'm a 'naïve, political spokesman' because of one song I wrote that was very blunt.

It's clearly something that frustrates you a lot, isn't it?

It didn't really at all, and it just keeps coming up! What saddens me is, rather than people tearing into the fact that it's political or that it is quite direct, is that because it's different to what's on the first album, or different to other artists out there - and I don't mean different in that it's necessarily progressive - people have just dismissed it. And it doesn't really seem fair.

You're on the bill for Glastonbury this year and a lot of people have weighed in with why they think the ticket sales have been comparatively slow. What do you think?

I think it's the weather. I've been to Glastonbury for the last four years and it was hellish. No matter what people say about the state of Glastonbury and the mud, there's so many other amazing festivals, like the Latitude lineup which is incredible and you know it's going to be hot. I think people, no matter how good the lineup and how prestigious the festival, don't relish the prospect of playing £160 to get rained on. It's a shame because if Glastonbury was sunny this year, it'd change everything, because people would be excited to come back. But people can't really remember a sunny Glastonbury.

So it's nothing to do with Jay-Z headlining?

That's been really frustrating me too. I love Jay-Z and I think he's the best rapper in the world, if not one of the best of all time and Glastonbury's supposed to be a collection of eclectic, exciting music, so why are people tearing into the fact that they've gone out the person who's the best at what he does? How often would you get to see someone like Jay-Z? The Eavises have tried to put on a bill that's different.

Just one final thing Sam - the Shepherd's Bush Empire gig seemed like it was an emotional night for you, especially having your parents in the audience - did you ever imagine yourself playing there?

I didn't really, to be honest. It was emotional for a couple of reasons, one it being Shepherd's Bush Empire so having been to so many gigs there myself, and with my mum and dad being there, but also it was quite an overwhelming reception. When you kind of get kicked in the teeth on a regular basis about stuff, which I have been a bit on this album, it's easy to forget that there are people who do like what you're doing. And so it was quite overwhelming, people gave a lot back and had a good time, so it was an amazing atmosphere. My favourite thing about doing shows is the energy that comes together from people in a room and I think that night was a highpoint.
