Scottish indie rockers Franz Ferdinand are to open the 2009 Shockwaves NME awards shows, it has been confirmed.

The art band will headline the first show of the tour at the Heaven nightclub on January 20th, previewing their new album Tonight: Franz Ferdinand.

"We're going to play the gig to celebrate Ulysses coming out and Heaven is the best place to go and celebrate," said lead singer Alex Kapranos.

"The new songs are the type that should be heard in clubs so we liked the idea of playing a show in one. We want people close to us who are dancing and sweating, that's the vibe that we want.

"We definitely don't want polite theatre shows for this record- we want some excitement!"

Hotly-tipped US hardcore band The Gaslight Anthem will play at Shepherds Bush Empire while Ida Maria, Simian Mobile Disco and Mystery Jets are also headlining shows in February.

The Islington Academy hosts three nights of Stateside action with appearances from Black Lips (Sunday 15th), Dallas psychedelic rock band Secret Machines (Monday 16th) and Californian new wave hip hop act Iglu and Hartly (Sunday 15th, Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th)

Tricky takes to the stage in Shepherds Bush, while Metronomy close the tour on February 24th at Camden's Koko.

"The infamous shows get London buzzing for a whole five weeks, bringing a totally diverse line up of the most exciting artists around to the capital," said Hamish MacBain, live editor for NME.

"This year is no exception and who better to launch the most exciting season of live music ever than everyone's favourite Scots Franz. The hardest part will be deciding which shows to see!"
