Matthew Vaughn reaches for the heavens with Stardust

Friday, 22 Feb 2008 19:27
Matthew Vaugn's withdrawal from X3 led to the excellent Stardust.
After making the leap from production work on Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch to showing a very real talent for directing on the superb Layer Cake, Matthew Vaughn seemed set to surprise moviegoers across the globe when he was attached to helm X3, the third installment in Marvel's massive mutant franchise.

While his reasons for later stepping down from the project were perfectly understandable - the 36-year-old wasn't willing to uproot his wife Claudia Schiffer and their two young children to North America for at least a year - his replacement by Rush Hour director Brett Ratner resulted in the confused mess of X3 and disappointed audiences the world over...

Or so it would have, had Vaughn's next directing move not been one of immense ambition in tackling a bestselling Neil Gaiman novel and creating one of the biggest hits of 2007 in Stardust.

Adapted from Gaiman's comedy/romance/fantasy novel by Jane Goldman (Jonathan Ross' wife), it's a thrilling tale of pirates, witches, secret worlds, kings, ghosts, falling stars and true love.

Charlie Cox steps up to the big leagues as village boy Tristan, eager to capture the heart of the beautiful but cold Victoria (Sienna Miller) by catching said falling celestial orb for her. But when the star turns out to be the irritable Yvaine (Claire Danes), Tristan faces a battle against the attention of the sons (some living, some ghostly) of a dying king, a scurvy sky pirate (Robert De Niro), a treacherous witch (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Ricky Gervais.

With its A-list cast, magical mix of action, romance and comedy and some absolutely stunning scenery, Stardust was deservedly one of the biggest hits of the year and takes its DVD bow on Monday February 25th.

Ahead of its release, Matthew Vaughn talks to inthenews.co.uk's Lewis Bazley about the story of Stardust, casting Charlie Cox as Tristan, Robert De Niro's... surprising character in the film and much, much more...
