Shawn Levy's rehash, The Pink Panther, has stormed to the top of the UK's box office chart.
The slapstick comedy, starring Steve Martin, made just under £2 million on its opening weekend.
Critics have widely panned the film but then Levy was always facing an impossible task in improving Blake Edwards' 1963 classic which starred the brilliant Peter Sellers and David Niven.
But its surprising box office performances saw it beat off competition from James McTeigue's thriller V for Vendetta to top the list.
Produced by Matrix brains the Wachowski brothers, V for Vendetta earned just over £1.2 million.
Last week's number one, The Hills Have Eyes, slips two places to third while long-running hit Chicken Little remained in fourth.
One of the most eagerly-awaited releases, Oscar-winning South Africa film Tsotsi, directed by Gavin Hood, entered the chart in tenth after making £200,000 in takings.
