The Dark Knight has returned to the top of the UK box office charts after being unseated by The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

The Batman Begins sequel had fallen to number two after the third film in the Mummy franchise debuted in the top spot but has reclaimed the crown in its fourth week on release, having taken £2.3 million.

Having grossed more than $440 million (£236 million) in the US alone, The Dark Knight is already the most successful film of the year.

Musical adaptation Mamma Mia! climbed one place to second while Adam Sandler's new effort You Don't Mess With the Zohan was the highest new entry.

The comedy, which sees Sandler as an Israeli special agent who moves to the US to pursue his dreams of becoming a hair stylist, took £1.5 million in its opening weekend to claim third spot.

Tomb of the Dragon Emperor fell to fourth while Wild Child and Star Wars: The Clone Wars entered at fifth and sixth positions respectively after their first days at screens in the UK and Ireland.
