A new film company has bought up the rights to the Terminator movie franchise in a multi-million dollar deal.

Halcyon has acquired the franchise from Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajina, who have held the sci-fi thriller's reins since Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, who made his name in the series' first instalment and subsequently reinvented himself as a hero in the following two films, will not be able to appear in the new films owing to the legal restrictions surrounding his job as governor of California.

According to reports Halcyon intends to start work on a second trilogy immediately, with the first film in the new franchise earmarked for a summer 2009 release.

As part of the deal scriptwriters John Brancato and Michael Ferris will pen the new film, with no word as yet on who will direct or star.

Movie franchises such as Batman and James Bond have enjoyed box office success in recent years after reinventing the films with a new direction and younger leads in Batman Begins and Daniel Craig's Casino Royale.
