A ten-year-old boy has won a role in Will Ferrell's new comedy Step Brothers, after his father paid over £20,000 at a charity auction.

The unnamed bidder paid $47,100 at the auction for the Cancer for College foundation, a charity established by a university friend of Ferrell's.

Though the boy's father declined to be named, he explained in a statement that the auction was important to him on a personal level.

"I lost my mother to ovarian cancer a few years ago, so I feel fortunate that my ten-year-old and I are able to participate in an event involving Cancer for College and Will Ferrell," he said.

The lucky youngster will meet the Anchorman star at the 14th annual Cancer for College golf tournament in southern California tomorrow, before filming his scene next month.

Ferrell added: "We are overwhelmed with the response and generosity to the auction. This money will help so many young people with their dreams of attending college."

Cancer for College was founded by the actor's friend Craig Pollard, a survivor of Hodgkin's disease, and aims to provide cancer patients with college scholarships.

Nearly £100,000 has been raised by the organisation since 1993.

Step Brothers, currently in production, features Ferrell and Talladega Nights co-star john C Reilly as two spoiled sons who become squabbling stepbrothers when their single parents get married.
