Tarantino isn't Death Proof

Tuesday, 25 Sep 2007 17:20
Tarantino's exploitation thriller entered the UK charts at number six
Quentin Tarantino's new movie Death Proof has failed to win over UK cinema audiences, taking just £407,525 in its first week of release.

Entering the UK box office charts at number six, the Kurt Russell-starring film opened on only 286 screens across the country.

In comparison, Run, Fatboy, Run, the directorial debut from Friends star David Schwimmer, took £1.2 million across its 401 screens, holding on to the UK number one spot for the third consecutive week.

Hot Fuzz actor Simon Pegg - who also co-wrote the movie - stars as a lovelorn security guard attempting to finish a marathon to win back the fiance he dumped at the altar five years previously.

Tarantino's new effort - his sixth feature - isn't quite as universally appealing, featuring Russell as the psychotic Stuntman Mike, who attempts to run pretty young women off the road in his eponymous immortal car.

Originally part of the Grindhouse double-bill with Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror, the movies were split after poor reviews led to disappointing box office receipts in the US.

Atonement, Joe Wright's adaptation of the Ian McEwan bestseller, rose to second in the UK box office charts, while the Adam Sandler/Kevin James comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry entered the rankings at number three, taking £1.09 million in its opening week.
