A plethora of stars attended last night's Los Angeles premiere of this summer's biggest blockbuster, Superman Returns.

As well as the film's leads, including Brandon Routh as Clark Kent, Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor and Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane, major celebrities in attendance included Star Wars' Mark Hamill, N'Sync member Joey Fatone and Hollywood darling Orlando Bloom.

Also present were actress Eva Longoria, boxer Mike Tyson and Anna Paquin of X-Men fame.

After enjoying the film the star-studded audience moved to an after-show party set in the garden of Clark Kent's Smallville home. There the film's director, Bryan Singer, was able to bask in the waves of critical praise which his work has received.

Superman Returns features the Man of Steel journeying back to Earth after a long spell visiting the remains of his home planet, Krypton. He finds his powers targeted by arch-nemesis Lex Luthor and must save the planet – and win back Lois Lane – before the film ends.

The film has had a long journey from story-board to big screen, having initially been worked upon by Tim Burton and Brett Ratner before producers handed the project to Singer.

Original Superman Christopher Reeve was rumoured to have been offered a part in the film, but his death in 2004 instead meant his role was limited to receiving Superman Returns' dedication.

Death proved no such problem for Marlon Brando, however. Archive footage from his role in 1976's Superman is utilised for a scene near the end of the film where he reprises his role as Superman's father, Jor-El.
