Morgan Freeman has confirmed he is in good health having been discharged from hospital after a car crash.

The Dark Knight star was hospitalised on Sunday when his vehicle flipped while driving in Tallahatchie County in Mississippi.

The actor sustained a broken arm, broken elbow and shoulder damage in the incident, while his female passenger Demaris Meyer was also injured.

But the 71-year-old has since released a short statement confirming his wellbeing.

"I left the hospital today just after 12 noon, Memphis time, (18:00 BST)" he told People magazine on Thursday.

"I'm doing very well. I feel real good. I just really, I thank the staff at 'Elvis Presley [Hospital]' and many, many thanks to my many well-wishers. It's great to know people care about you"

The actor was driving on Highway 32 in Tallahatchie County when he lost control of his vehicle, which flipped, turning several times before landing upright in a ditch.

Both Freeman and Demaris Meyer were wearing seatbelts during the crash, Mississippi Highway Patrol Sergeant Ben Williams confirmed.

"There's no indication that either alcohol or drugs were involved," he added.

Sergeant Williams added that it was possible the Oscar-winning actor had fallen asleep at the wheel.

It was revealed on Thursday that Freeman and his wife of 24 years Myrna Colley-Lee are to divorce.

"For legal and practical purposes the pair have been separated since December 2007," Freeman's lawyer Bill Luckett confirmed.
