Human rights group Amnesty International has honoured Hollywood actress Jennifer Lopez for her latest film.

Bordertown, which she both produced and starred in, examines the murders of hundreds of women in the Mexico city of Ciudad Juarez, close to the border with the US.

East Timor's prime minister Jose Ramos-Horta, a Nobel peace laureate, handed her the Artists for Amnesty award yesterday.

Lopez said that she felt "very humbled" to be receive the honour, the Associated Press news agency reports.

In the film she appears as an investigative journalist and stars alongside Antonio Banderas and Martin Sheen.

Amnesty International estimates that about 400 women and girls have been killed in Ciudad Juarez since 1993.

Speaking at the ceremony in Berlin, which came ahead of the city's film festival, Lopez described the situation as "one of the world's most shocking, disturbing and under-reported crimes against humanity".

Also at the ceremony was Norma Andrade, who founded support group Nuestras Hijas de Regreso a Casa (Our Daughters Back Home) after her 17-year-old daughter was found murdered in 2001.

"She's a remarkable woman and a true inspiration," Lopez said.
