Gibson: No thanks, rabbi

Saturday, 19 Aug 2006 11:40
Mel Gibson: Thanks, but no thanks
Mel Gibson has politely turned down the chance to publicly apologise in a Los Angeles synagogue for anti-Semitic comments he made last month.

The 50-year-old Braveheart star has already apologised for acting confrontationally towards police officers when he was picked up for drink-driving on California's Pacific coast highway near Malibu.

Gibson blamed his "horrific relapse" on the alcoholism which has cursed him throughout his adult life.

Now it seems he has no intention of repeating that public apology on Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement, as Rabbi David Baron has suggested.

Alan Nierob, Gibson's publicist, told website TMZ.com: "Mr Gibson hasn't declined any offers, as I haven't even discussed any offers with him. It's way too soon in his recovery, and frankly he is not interested in anything public or a photo opp."

Perhaps the Mad Max star is pining for a low profile, something he's been without for some time now.

Alternatively maybe the massive support he has received from Hollywood and beyond has helped his decision.

Jodie Foster, Sigourney Weaver and pop star Pink are among those who have leapt to his defence, helping dampen public criticism and boosting publicity for his new film, Apocalypto.End of story
