Gibson avoids jail

Gibson avoided jail after striking a plea bargain over drink driving charges
Actor Mel Gibson has escaped a jail term after pleading no contest to a drink driving charge.

The Braveheart star, who was stopped by police for speeding along Malibu's Pacific Coast Highway last month, has instead been sentenced to three years probation for driving with a blood alcohol level above California's legal limit.

The Hollywood veteran, who did not appear in person at the Malibu Superior Court for yesterday's hearing, evaded two further charges after striking a plea bargain with prosecutors.

The Los Angeles district attorney's office said Gibson had been ordered to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings five times a week for the next four months and three times a week for a further seven-and-a-half months, as part of the deal.

The 50-year-old actor and director was also fined $1300 (£685) and ordered to appear in public service announcements on the hazards of drink driving.

Charges accusing the star of driving under the influence and having an open bottle of tequila in his car were dropped by the court.

Gibson was not charged with speeding or for the anti-Semitic comments he made to a police officer during his arrest in the early hours of July 28th.

The director of the controversial 2004 movie The Passion of Christ later expressed regret for the drunken comments, which caused outrage amongst the Jewish community.

Gibson, who has previously admitted having problems with alcohol, has volunteered to enter a rehabilitation programme immediately, his lawyer said.End of story
