Despite the hype surrounding its release, Snakes on a Plane has failed to impress cinemagoers.

The film's producers set tongues wagging after they announced that critics would not be allowed to see the film before its release, leading to rumours that they were too fearful of negative reviews.

Internet hype about the film before its release suggested that the film could be one of the biggest hits this year, but although it is currently at the number one spot in the US weekend box office, the film brought in just $15.3 million (£8 million) - far less than the low $20million range that New Line Cinema hoped it would generate.

Telling the story of, unsurprisingly, snakes on a plane, the film follows Samuel L Jackson as he accompanies a witness travelling to testify in a trial. But an assassin bent on killing the witness lets loose a crate of deadly snakes, causing terror at 30,000 feet.

Since its release US critics have shown widespread contempt for the film, with Richard Roeper from the Chicago Sun-Times arguing: "Without that title and a year's worth of internet-fuelled buzz, this would be just another unforgettable, mildly entertaining, mid-August throw-away movie."
