Shia LaBeouf's new thriller Eagle Eye has flown to the top of the US box office charts after its opening weekend on release.
Despite a poor critical reception, the Dreamworks picture took $29.2 million (£16.2 million) in its first three days on release to claim the top spot.
Eagle Eye sees LaBeouf reteaming with Disturbia director DJ Caruso - along with Michelle Monaghan - in a tale of strangers thrown together by mysterious phone calls that push them into increasingly dangerous situations and leave them the country's most wanted fugitives.
"It's a good ride, and an audience pleasure. You get to suspend disbelief and just go for it," Dreamworks spokesman Chip Sullivan said of the film's successful opening weekend.
Nights in Rodanthe, a new romantic drama starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane, debuted in second position while last week's number one Lakeview Terrace fell to third.
Fireproof, which sees a fireman (Kirk Cameron) and his wife (Erin Bethea) undergoing an unorthodox challenge to save their marriage, was the surprise hit of the weekend, debuting in fourth.
However, Spike Lee's new film, military drama Miracle at St Anna, pulled in just $3.5 million (£1.9 million) to open in ninth.
