Despite insisting he wanted to skip the world premiere for his new film Mission Impossible III last night, it appeared the draw of the lights and fan adoration proved just too much for Tom Cruise to turn down.
The Hollywood mainstay had said he was intending to stay at home with fiancee Katie Holmes and newborn baby Suri instead of attending the premiere in Rome.
However, a last-minute change of heart saw him, in true action hero style, fly out to the event to arrive just in time to steal the limelight away from co-stars Laurence Fishburne and Michelle Monaghan.
Speaking at a press conference it Italy's capital, Cruise explained: "My own 'mission: impossible' was getting here. That was the mission impossible. Because it kept going back and forth.
"I wasn't going to come and then Kate said, you know, 'Go. Go.' So I'm here. And I'll be here for a few hours and then I'll get back on an airplane and go back home to Kate and Suri."
As if prompted by an off-screen aide, he then added: "My daughter has just been born and I want to be close to her. I thought about not coming to Rome, but Kate said go and have fun."
However, despite his comments, Cruise is expected to remain with promoters and travel to Blighty for the London premiere.
