Morgan Freeman and his wife of 24 years are to divorce, his lawyer has confirmed.

The Dark Knight star was involved in a dramatic car accident, flipping his car while driving in Mississippi and sustaining a broken arm, broken elbow and minor shoulder damage.

Speaking to Access Hollywood on Wednesday, Freeman's lawyer Bill Luckett revealed that the actor and his costumer designer wife Myrna Colley-Lee "are involved in a divorce action".

"For legal and practical purposes the pair have been separated since December 2007," he added.

The actor was driving on Highway 32 in Tallahatchie County when he lost control of his vehicle, which flipped, turning several times before landing upright in a ditch.

Both Freeman and his female passenger Demaris Meyer were wearing seatbelts during the crash, Mississippi Highway Patrol Sergeant Ben Williams confirmed.

"It's going to take a few months because he got banged up pretty badly actually," said Mr Luckett, after visiting the Oscar-winner in hospital.

"He's in good spirits today and he hopes his golf swing is going to be better than ever now with his fixed arm," the lawyer added.

Mr Luckett, who co-owns a restaurant and blues club in Clarksdale, Mississippi with the actor, has said he and Freeman have been friendly with Ms Meyer, a FedEx executive, for some time.

Freeman, 71, married Colley-Lee in June 1984 and also has two children from his 12-year marriage to Jeannette Adair Bradshaw.
