Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard has admitted learning an American accent for Public Enemies was "very hard".
The La Vie En Rose star plays legendary bank robber John Dillinger's girlfriend Billie Frechette in the Michael Mann drama and had to master a Midwestern accent.
"It was a technical issue!" she joked. "When I started, I thought it was impossible but I really tried to do my best.
"Fortunately, Billie was half-French but didn't have a French accent because she'd lived in North Dakota."
Cotillard told a London press conference: "It was very technical, you have to work and work and practice constantly.
"It's about using your whole face, jaw, tongue, body, in totally different ways."
But the French actress, soon to be seen in upcoming musical Nine, alongside Daniel Day-Lewis, explained it was worth the effort, saying: "It was very, very interesting - I love English language so that made it easier."
Public Enemies is out now.
