Actress Marion Cotillard has said she felt no intimidation at being one of the only women on set for Michael Mann's gangster drama Public Enemies.
The Oscar winner, who plays bank robber John Dillinger's girlfriend,
"Michael Mann has a great respect for women," she told a London press conference. "He's surrounded by women in his life.
"I think that's why the women in all his movies are very strong, they really have a strong personality and a very special place in the film."
The La Vie En Rose star also revealed part of her research involved meeting with convicts' wives to understand the effect of a life of crime.
"We spent a few hours together and it was very, very emotional," she added.
"When they went back through those stories, they felt the same feelings they'd felt before; the fear, the extreme pain, because you don't know what's going to happen.
"They didn't know if your husband was going to be alive. It helped me a lot to learn about these experiences and create the character."
Public Enemies is out now.
