The much-hyped monster movie Cloverfield has topped the UK box office on its opening weekend.
Set in New York, the film follows a group of unknown actors on the night a huge monster strikes the city.
Taking £3.5 million in its first three days the movie knocked Johnny Depp's Sweeney Todd off the top spot.
The Oscar-nominated musical dropped to second place after taking £1.7 million.
Desperate Housewife star Eva Longoria's new comedy Over Her Dead Body entered the chart in third position.
The film involves Longoria's character being killed on her wedding day before returning as a ghost that haunts her fiancé's new girlfriend.
New rom-com Penelope starring Christina Ricci and Richard E. Grant charted at fourth after taking £770,000.
Oscar favourite, No Country for Old Men, fell one place to fifth while Hilary Swank's adaptation of the Cecelia Ahern novel PS I Love You came in at sixth.
The rest of the top ten is made up school girl mischief in St Trinian's, Jason Lee's Underdog and Alien Vs Predator: Requiem.
