British actor Jim Broadbent has joined the cast of the latest Indiana Jones film, the movie's maker has confirmed.

Lucasfilm Ltd announced the involvement of the Oscar-winning star in a statement yesterday on its official Indiana Jones website.

Work began on the latest film in the adventure series on Monday, with director Steven Spielberg overseeing the movie.

However it has not yet been confirmed what role will be taken by Broadbent, whose vast repertoire of film roles includes parts in hit movies such as Iris, Bridget Jones' Diary and Moulin Rouge.

Nonetheless the 57-year-old actor hinted last week that he might be playing a character much like Indiana Jones' former bumbling mentor Professor Marcus Brody, who was played by Denholm Elliot until his death in 1992.

Broadbent let the news of his cameo in the forthcoming adventure film slip during an interview with website britfilms.tv.

"I'm doing a cameo in the next Indiana Jones, so working with Mr Spielberg should be an experience," he said.

Asked whether he might be starring as a new Brody-like character he replied: "That would do for me."

John Hurt, Ray Winstone, Cate Blanchett and main star Harrison Ford have already been confirmed for the fourth film in the Indiana Jones adventure series.

However Scottish actor Sean Connery, who played Indiana Jones' father in the third film, will not be returning for the latest movie.

Star Wars creator George Lucas is acting as executive producer on the film, which is due for release in May 2008.
