We know it's difficult for those poor X Factor judges, but is that really an excuse to start throwing pre-emptive glasses of water at the wannabe popstars?

Apparently so for Louis Walsh, who engaged in the pleasant delights of water-chucking at one auditioning singer during the show's London auditions.

Things got off to a bad start when the rather militant 18-year-old from Yorkshire, Debbie, marched into the auditioning room and started explaining in uncompromising terms the true extent of her talent.

"I'm amazing. I've got stage presence, I've got the voice, I've got the looks and I've got everything," she proclaimed.

Sadly her vocal performance let her down, as is so often the way, and the judges were less than impressed. Sharon Osborne told her that she lacked "charisma", Simon Cowell called her "a bit pub singer-ish" and Walsh concluded by telling her that "the reality is you're not very good".

The judged soon became the judge, however, as Debbie turned on Louis and told him that "you can't sing, you have no talent, get out".

The situation quickly deteriorated despite Sharon's timely intervention to remove Debbie from the room. The plucky 18-year-old wasn't having any of it, running back into the judging room and picking up Cowell's glass of water ominously.

Quick as a flash Louis responded to the apparent threat by grabbing his own glass of water and, with a deft flick of the wrist, emptying it over a now distraught Debbie.

Her pathetic retaliation was easily dodged by a giggling Louis, who remained insistent that the attack was purely defensive in nature - as she was just about to do the same to him.

"You threw water over a contestant, Louis!" a shocked Cowell said. "You're not supposed to do that. You can't throw water over the singers, Louis."

Actually, it seems like he can. But the show's producers had their revenge on the poor Irishman.

Whereas Cowell has the 16-24 group and Sharon the over-25s, Louis faces having to look after the unpopular groups category in the boot camp stage of the talent show, which begins next week.
