British filmmaker Guy Ritchie has been signed by Warner Bros to adapt action-packed comic Lobo for the big screen, it has emerged.
The Snatch helmer will follow his upcoming Sherlock Holmes film, due for release at Christmas, with a take on the alien bounty hunter, according to Variety.
Created by Keith Giffen and Roger Slifer in 1983, Lobo was initially created as a parody of ultra-violent comic book characters such as Wolverine and the Punisher, though to Giffen's chagrin he later became a "high violence poster boy".
While the character has gone through several incarnations, Ritchie's film will depict Lobo as a 7ft tall, blue-skinned biker and bounty hunter.
Don Payne's most recent script draft will see Lobo - the last Czarnian, having killed the rest of his race - landing on Earth in a bid to apprehend four fugitives and teaming with a small town teenage girl to bring the villains to justice.
Joel Silver, Akiva Goldsman and Andrew Rona will produce the Lobo adaptation, a co-production between Silver Pictures and Weed Road, with shooting expected to begin early next year.
Warner Bros is reportedly aiming for a PG-13-rated release in the US, with a strong emphasis on visual effects and Ritchie's appointment adding the "irreverent, gruff tone" of the likes of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and RocknRolla.
