Former popstar Billie Piper has confirmed she is leaving Doctor Who after two series in a "stunning" season-finale exit.
The 23-year-old has played chirpy assistant Rose Tyler to both the ninth and tenth Doctors in the long-running show, first to Christopher Ecclestone and now David Tennant.
But Billie has announced that she is hanging up her Tardis to pursue other projects, although she was gushing in her praise for the creator of the new series, Russell T Davies.
"Rose and I have gone on the most incredible journey with Russell T Davies and the cast and crew of Doctor Who over the past two years," she said.
"I am truly indebted to Russell for giving me the chance to play Rose Tyler, and to all the Doctor Who fans old and new who have been so supportive of me in this amazing role. Thank you so much."
Billie also revealed that her character's exit would not disappoint die-hard fans, as Rose and the Doctor return to a seemingly normal Earth only to discover that a master-race of aliens is preparing an invasion that threatens to wipe out the human race.
Davies said: "The Doctor lives a dangerous life and when Rose joined him on his adventures she was aware of this. With a series climax called Doomsday on its way, I can't guarantee who will survive and who won't, but I can assure you the Tardis is going on its scariest journey yet!"
The writer added that the Doctor Who team had been working on Billie's exit for the last 12 months.
Heads were turned when the BBC announced that Billie had won a major role in the cult TV series, but she had won plaudits for her transition from pop to acting, winning the National Television award for most popular actress in 2005.
As Billie bows out, the Doctor's search for a new out of work singer begins... Britney Spears perhaps?
