Ray Davies, front man of The Kinks
Ray Davies, the legendary songwriter and Kinks frontman has been given a prestigious icon award from Broadcast Music Inc (BMI), the American performing right organisation.
Davies was handed the Icon last night at the BMI's 2006 London Awards for his "enduring influence on generations of music listeners".
"This award does mean a lot to me as it's American and The Kinks were banned from the US for four years at the height of our career. I don't think any other group has been banned to that extent," Davies told ITN.
Listen to Your Heart, the 1989 Roxette hit which was re-released by DHT, won one of the BMI's highest accolades, the Robert S Musel Award, after it was named as song of the year.
Million-Air certificates were also given out to artists whose work has been played over three million times on US television and radio. Shania Twain won one for her song You're Still the One, which has been played six million times.
Other certificate recipients include Sir Elton John, Eric Clapton, the Bee Gees, Sting and Seal.
