Mamma Mia! was the main winner at the National Movie Awards, claiming two prizes at the London ceremony.

The West End adaptation, starring Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep, was named best musical while Streep beat off competition from the likes of Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker and Cate Blanchett to win the best female award.

Though its leading man Christian Bale missed out on the best male award - claimed by Johnny Depp for Sweeney Todd - The Dark Knight triumphed over Iron Man, Hancock and The Incredible Hulk to be named best superhero.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which saw Harrison Ford returning as the adventurous archaeologist after 19 years, was named best action/adventure while Juno took the best comedy prize.

And Disney/Pixar's WALL-E, about the last robot on Earth, was named best family film over The Golden Compass, Kung Fu Panda and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

Best male nominees such as Pierce Brosnan, Will Smith, Depp and Bale did not attend the ceremony at London's Royal Festival Hall while Streep and Kylie Minogue were among celebrities to shun the red carpet in favour of entering via the back door.
