The number one spot in the UK box office charts has been held by Tropic Thunder for a second week.

The action comedy, starring Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr, took almost £1.3 million to stay atop the charts despite the challenge of action films Taken and Death Race and cop drama Righteous Kill.

Tropic Thunder sees Stiller as Tugg Speedman, a clueless movie star shooting a Vietnam biopic which turns dangerously real when the actors are dropped deep into the jungle.

Mamma Mia!, which charted at number two last week despite having been on release for 11 weeks, fell to fifth as a spate of new releases stormed the top five.

Taken, starring Liam Neeson as a vengeful father intent on finding his kidnapped daughter, took £1.2 million to claim second while the pairing of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino was enough to entice UK moviegoers into taking the film to third position.

The top ten films in the UK are: (last week's position)

1 Tropic Thunder - £1,345,392
2 Taken - £1,165,986 (-)
3 Righteous Kill - £768,803 (-)
4 Death Race - £683,038 (-)
5 Mamma Mia! - £609,278 (2)
6 The Women - £405,396 (3)
7 The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas - £403,965 (6)
8 The Duchess - £349,976 (5)
